Causes of Fear of Failure:

To know how the “fear of failure causes”, we first need to understand what “failure” really is. We all have different definitions of failure, just because we all have different benchmarks, values, and belief systems. Failure for one person may only be a great learning experience for others. Many of us fear failure, at least some time. But the fear of failure is when we let fear stop us from doing things that can move us forward to achieve our goals.

Fear of failure causes”  due to many attributes. For example, having parents who are critical or not supportive is a cause for some people. Because they are routinely underestimated or insulted in childhood, they bring negative feelings toward maturity.

Experiencing a terrible event at some point in your life can also be a cause. For example, say that a few years ago you gave an important presentation in front of a large group, and you did it very badly. That experience may be so terrible that you become afraid of failing in other things. And that fear is carried for many years.

How not to fear failure

It is important to realize that in everything we do, there is always the possibility that we will fail. Facing that opportunity, and embracing it, is not only brave – it also gives us a fuller, more valuable life.

However, here are some ways to reduce the fear of failure:

Analyze all potential results – Many people experience fear of failure because they are afraid of the unknown. Remove that fear by considering all the potential results of your decision. Our Tree Decision article will teach you how to map the possible results visually.

Learning to think more positively – Thinking positively is a very powerful way to build self-confidence and neutralize self-sabotage. Our articles, Mind Awareness, Rational Thought, and Positive Thinking are comprehensive resources to learn how to change your thinking.

Look at worse scenarios – In some cases, the worst case scenario might really be disastrous, and maybe very rational to fear failure. But in other cases, this worst case is actually not that bad, and recognizing this can help.

Have a contingency plan – If you are afraid of failing something, having “Plan B” in place can help you feel more confident to move forward.
